Windsurfing: Point Clear Wind Direction: WSW Wind Stength: 25/30 Surf / Sea State: smooth Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny and warm Max Speed: 30.79 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 33.20 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Sunday 5th July- Windsurf ***** - Point Clear – sunny.
Fanatic Falcon 80 with Tushingham X-15 5.8m and 28 cm fin +
F2 277 Ride with and 32 fin.
Fin – 30.74 knot max, 28.86 knot ave ., 13.79 knot hour, 20.59 knot mile,
53.30 km., 19.01 knot alpha.
After two far from perfect sessions I nearly didn’t bother going to day
as couldn’t face the 80 mile around trip drive but in the end I am glad I
did as it turned out to be one of the best sessions of the year:) With
several mates going just down the coast to West Mersea but with 40 knot
winds forecast I decided that Point Clear would be the better venue for me,
much safer too, in the end the big winds didn’t make it but had it to 30
knots more than enough to have a great day! After a cloudy dull yesterday
we were treated to wall to wall sunshine even if we did wake to light rain
in Felixstowe! Maggie decided she needed a rest after a busy day in the
garden yesterday so decided to come today and actually enjoyed her day
relaxing, a breezy walk around past Brightlingsea and catching up with
several people we hadn’t seen for ages. We arrived at the Green just
before ten with Roger and Paul Vickers already there with a WSW wind
gusting to 30 mph. Parking in our preferred spot right at the end out of
the way as the car park soon fills up and we had 30 kiters out again along
with a similar number of windsurfers. So the only negative points today
were the numbers of kiters in a tiny area of the lagoon ( some actually
looked behind them before jumping or turning, but sadly the majority
don’t!) and the large amount of weed but I didn’t get any stuck on my
fin, helped by the speed you were travelling across the water! After a
quick chat with Roger and Paul in their campervan it was time to sort out
todays kit as the tide was coming in fast! It looked windy enough for my
Falcon 80 so set that up first, then rigged my favourite sail for here my
Tushingham X – 15 5.8 and was going to rig my 5.2 as well but
slalom/speed sailor of F – hit fins Shaun Cook arrived and the wind had
eased and he talked of rigging 7 but in the end went for his 6.2. So, I had
time to rig another sail and went for my 7m, in hind sight I should have
gone for my 6.4 as although my 5.8 was great for general blasting it was a
fraction small for sailing broad which might have cost me a knot or too.
That didn’t matter in the slightest as I can’t get near the slalom
sailors on their 2020 gear but it great fun trying! In the end I had my
first session on the F2 Ride 277 at 100 lt. and I should use this little
board as its really fun to sail, nice and fast and I can even gybe it
nicely, well in flat water anyway! With the lagoon still a little on the
shallow side you had to be careful, Shaun and I had a near miss early on as
I went broad at the bottom of the lagoon and nearly sailed over the back of
his board, I just didn’t think anyone else was out at the time! I tired
broad runs at both ends of the lagoon concentrating on the car park end
near where the catamaran is moored, going for some nice gybes mainly
because Dave White was there with his BIG lens so fingers crossed, I get in
his pics from today! I had some lovely runs down into the creek at the
bottom of the lagoon, not overly fast but nice and quiet! With high tide
approaching and it bumping up a little I sail back to the van for a top
sandwich with Mag, chatting with Michael Galbraith, Paul Michael and a
blast from the past Francis and Pete Roe, also Melanie Poole came over and
introduced her family, their first time at Point Clear! Lunch over it was
time to head out again and with Simon Chippington trying his big speedboard
so I decided to give my Falcon 80 again as the wind was good. With the tide
dropping it was the best of the conditions and I managed to slightly
improve my to speed and was getting some nice gybes on my small board but
it was scary sailing by the shingle bar in the kite zone! With the wind
going even more west and going patchy and with the tide dropping it was
time to call it a day. Back at the van after one of my best sessions sunny
and windy for a welcome cuppa and homemade rock cake:) Then all we had to
do is drive home and look forward to yet another day windsurfing, Bradfield
on the Stour this time:)
